Process of making / Manufacturing.

• The basic hexagonal shape and dome are often "cold-headed" or "hot-forged" from C-276 wire or rod.

• The internal cavity is drilled and the hexagonal flats are refined.

• Precision tapping creates the internal threads. Because Hastelloy is tough, high-strength tool bits and slow speeds are required.

• The nuts are heated to ~1121C and rapid-quenched to ensure maximum corrosion resistance.

• Often finished to a high-luster "mirror finish" to prevent contaminants from sticking to the surface

 

Chemical properties 

• Nickel (Ni): Base (~47%)

• Molybdenum (Mo): 16% to 17% 

• Chromium (Cr): 13.5% to 16.5%

• Tungsten (W): 3% to 3.5%

• Iron (Fe): 4% to 6%.

• Low Carbon content: Minimized to prevent grain-boundary precipitation during welding or forming
